40th Anniversary Review: 04/03/76: Let's Do The Latin Hustle

Tina Hoskins began her singing career in 1969, her first single included an unknown Elton John playing the piano. To avoid confusion with the well known songstress Mary Hopkin she adopted her fathers first name as her surname and became Tina Charles. She appeared on Cockney Rebel's Make Me Smile as a backing singer and on 5000 volts single I'm on Fire as lead vocals. It is therefore surprising that she was only 21 when she had her first hit song and this weeks No.1. She would turn 22 a week later (10th) Happy Birthday Tina!

No.1
Tina Charles - I Love To Love

Pan's People danced to:
Eddie Drennon & B.B.S. Unlimited - Let's Do The Latin Hustle
This dance survives as part of the Vicar's collection and my research can tell you that this was a rather sedate dance amongst wide hanging banners against an orange background. The outfits were long slit black (upper) and rose (lower) dresses. Matching flower-like bows in their hair.

I quite like Tina Charles. Sometimes before some Tina Martell comes up I think I'm getting Tina Charles, but am brought back to reality with a bump. But I never knew she was a Hoskins. Surely confusing Mary Hopkins with Tina Hoskins would be as likely as confusing Tina Charles with Ray Charles?! But never mind, I'm sure she made the right nomenclature choice.
Happy birthday indeed!

The Latin Hustle is a nice bit of upbeat-laid-back-smooth-pre-disco-lounge. I'm imagining the tempo is sufficient for some nice moves from the People. And an orange background and roses in the barnet always looked good. I'm trying my hardest to think too much about the back-slit shirts...

Maybe one day, hey?

I liked Tina Charles - still have her compilation.  I was not fond of this song at first but it grew on you.  Biddu certainly came up with the goods with this song.  There was also the song You Set My Heart on Fire Parts I and II doing the rounds in underground clubs at this time too but this never took off and radio favoured the former.

I have never seen the Eddie Drennon dance and would like to.  I do remember a similar if not equal version of this song was in the charts at the same time by the M&O Band.  Remember Tom Browne playing this one but not the latter on his Sunday chart show.
Everywhere, wherever you look, manipulation rearing it's head.

My views on the slightly-stocky sweater-swiper are well known, however this #1 was a reasonable song I suppose.  The Eddie Drennan effort is rather horrid but I'm sure Pans People considerably enhanced it.  Sorry to be a bit of a downer but I did really like Make Me Smile and had forgotten (or didn't know) that Ms Charles was in it somewhere so thanks for that info Doc

Freudian slip perhaps Doc as no black tights!
And I did like that blue dress.  I'm sure I've seen that lady before somewhere.

That was from GD's description. It was cobbled together from snippets I've found. (Just like the BBC report :-))

You need to make better notes next time GD .
Must have been tough trying to watch and make notes at the same time. I was trying to burn the images on to my retina at the time with little success.

What you need is glasses with a concealed camera, James Bond style.

Ahhh! haha. Bit harsh though, she's still looking lovely, kinda. Who doesn't a love a bit of a chunk? ...bit of chunky knitwear I meant to say.

Mind you, that aspect ratio doesn't do the poor love any favours. May I offer...

They say the camera adds 10 pounds. But showing a 4x3 image in widescreen appears to add 2 or 3 stone!

I love to love, its a decent pop tune no doubt and i dont have anything negative to say on this one, the others i have heard of her were less pleasurable i'll leave it at that. How about this for some sort of insane tribute from err Brazil i think, anyone would think she was Madonna.

The Eddie Drennon track, hmm very nice, not very commercial sounding though, the earlyish disco stuff seems more funk driven and acoustic than a lot of the later releases as they started to get more electronic.

haha! Clearly shop at the same places! Hmmm... but have you ever seen Tina and Patti in the same room?!

Mind you, this is how to wear stripes. Slightly-socky...
