I am looking for an anorak......
or rather I'm in training to be an anorak myself , so one day I can go on Disastermind with John Hymphries and
answer questions on Ruby Flipper,as my specialist subject. But I've a long way to go.
I wonder if anyone can give the exact ages of all the members of the Ruby Flipper troupe the day they started on Top of the Pops?
two down, five to go, so to speak.
I shall await Ryan and Suefan's input on their favourite girl. How old was Sue at the beginning of April 1976?
Is there a Cherryfan out there? She certainly blossomed out into a woman in her RF days. Was she early twenties?
Floyd looks about 18 in the 'Can't Help Falling in Love' routine but that's just a guess. Was he younger than that, I wonder?
Phil was interviewed on the TOTP website and if I remember correctly, he did say that he was a 19 year old in his RF time.
No idea about the short-tenured Gavin. He looked mid twenties.
Can anyone fill in the blanks re the Fipsters' ages?
According to the reveille newspaper on the 26/9/75 yes 9 or so months before Rf started they claim, Sue is 20 years old,5 ft 3 ins and 33.23.34. Cherry is also 20 years old, 5ft 2 ins and 34.22.33. No i dont have there inside leg measurments, lol.
Carl please help me here, coz im getting confused with Ruby Flipper. Whilst looking over the net regarding our magnificent 7 i came across a dvd for sale containing loads of there stuff. I was surprised to find listed other stuff that you/we didnt mention last night. 3 routines, here goes.
20/5/76 Mud `shake it down` danced by Cherry only.
15/07/76 100 tonnes and a feather `it only takes a minute girl` Danced by Lulu only.
26/08/76 Acker Bilk `aria` Danced by Patti only.
Can you confirm any of these routines were indeed danced by our gals, if you want i can find you the web page i found it on. I will be back on at nine tonight, hope you can clear this confusion up.
thanks for that. Interesting, you've got access to magazines from around that time.
So I suppose, if it was 9 months before RF, both Sue and Cherry could have been either 20 or 21 when Flipper started.
It's a good start. I wonder if we can narrow it down any further. Is there no info about Sue's/Cherry's birthday anywhere?
It would be nice if there was some newspaper article or interview with them from the time they were all in RF that interviewed them as a group and put their age in brackets- much easier! But does it even exist? Where are all the TOTP memorabilia collectors?
yes it's quite true that the three girls danced those solo routines. You can definitely find Lulu dancing solo to 'It only Takes a Minute' and Patti dancing solo to Aker Bilk's 'Aria' on youtube, but I don't think the Cherry one with Mud 'Shake it Down ' is on there. Maybe YMG will get them on this site. He hasn't got all the RF routines that exist uploaded here yet.
I think I know the DVD you mean - 'The Best of Ruby Flipper'. Someone has downloaded most of the Ruby Flipper clips from Einsfestival onto a DVD and is selling it online for a tenner. I think there's one or two they don't have on the DVD, I'll check.
Actually I've just checked again and that Ruby Flipper DVD does have all the surviving Ruby Flipper routines, apart from one.......
Floyd's solo routine to Tina Charles' 'Love Me Like a Lover' on the very first RF TOTP (a couple of songs after they had danced to 'I Can't Help Falling in Love').
I wonder if anyone has seen this. It's on youtube. The boy done good.
Does it rate as the one and only time a male dancer was given a routine to themselves on TOTP?
YMG, you have done very well sir, if I can deign to be so impertinent to quote your catchphrase.
Thanks for that scan.
I still think all we can say is that Sue was either 20 or 21 when Ruby Flipper started.
Can you help me ascertain which was Cherry's last appearance. She is with the duck on the 23/9 and at the disco on the 30/9 but avoided those sweaters on the 7/10. However, on that show RF are also listed as dancing to the duck. Do we know if this was a repeat or an actual performance?
