LOVE ME LIKE A LOVER

This post was updated on .
Love Me Like a Lover was written by J. Robinson and J.Bolden and sung by Tina Hoskins (changed to Charles to avoid confusion with Mary Hopkin).  The song opens with strange wolf-whistles and a screech and is a plaintive ditty begging for the treatment appropriate to a Lover.  I think the husband in question is watching the footie though.  Tina was born in Whitechapel  and in her early career appeared briefly on the Two Ronnies in 1971  and sang cover versions of songs on the TOTP album series in the early 70s too.  Famously she was the vocalist behind the 5000 volts hit “I’m on Fire” although Luan Peters was given the exposure with the Group’s appearances for this, presumably for her superior nubility (and perhaps for some legal reasons too).  Tina’s really big break was meeting and being produced by martial-arts-pop specialist Biddu and thereby getting her own #1 hit with the rather self-deprecating title  “I Love to Love (but my Baby Loves to Dance)”  in  early 1976.  At that time Trevor Horn and his fellow Buggle (whose name I won’t mention in case he’s in one of Ryan’s future Quiz Questions) were in Tina’s touring band.  Tina is rumoured to be my least favorite performing artist but actually this honour goes to Willie Nelson

I know this one is difficult to mark and I deliberately went for the most potentially controversial solo performance first.  Floid appears for less than 30 seconds and it is clear from my screenshots that he is actually an incredible shrinking man during this performance too.   Indeed fortunately, just as in the original 1957 version,  his clothes shrink with him when he’s very small.  Seriously though, Floid boogies along nicely here and looks very colourful (I think I used to have some golf trousers similar to his back in the Nicklaus/Watson era).  He is certainly doing his job here but I can’t pretend to compare this favourably with many other Flipper performances and he is very much in the background.  For me this is only 2.5/10 as Floid alone in the background and Tina in the foreground is not my idea of a good time and I never watch this, sorry Floid and Tina.  Oh and BTW the record it holds is that it was the last RF appearance to appear on the Blog (Ryan correct me if I’m wrong please).  Now please let me hear your views folks

Sorry

I can't get enthusiastic bout this, Tina looking like what Demis Rousous would look like if he had a shave and wore a wig , and Floid dressed as Rupert The Bear, dancing to the mediocre follow up to the vastly superior and catchy Biddu penned 'I Love To Love' - I really can't comment on anything else.

Not a good song, no sign of our lovelies and as ADB noted Floid looking like Rupert the Bear. Move along nothing to see here 1/10, next please.

Thanks Chaps.  I know this is a bit of a challenge but maybe someone can find something to love.  If not then TVC15 and My Way and I Only Have Eyes watch out for LMLAL cometh in all its evil glory

A challenge and a half...... I'm sorry to say but the appearance of old Floid is nothing more than an irrelevance alongside an equally forgettable song.  However, for biting the bullet and wearing those trousers I think this deserves a 2.

It's a great pity that we didn't get a close-up shot of Floyd here, it'd be interesting to see if he was pulling some silly faces, as well somebody in his position may do, it'd certainly add some comedic value, for what's basically, a rather bland scenario, with Floyd's confinement to the back of the stage, it's almost totally pointless, him being there at all, & it's not one of Tina Charles' greater-known tracks, when she sings #'Love Me Like A Lover'#, is she addressing Floyd?

5/10

Im sorry, but i think to give ratings to these sorts of performances is a little unfair. I do however appreciate our venerable host P4PM has a certain dilemma here and wants to include every performance for ratings. With so few Ruby routines on offer i can understand this and i will certainly contribute a rating. But what are we actually rating ? 30 seconds of a miniature Floid dancing to an average pop song that nobody will ever play, well unless your name is Floidfan.

Well as Floid is in what should have been his natural TOTPs environment ie-Ruby Flipper and not hanging around Legs & Co, i will be quite generous and give it `3 out of 10`.

Incidentally P4PM, you are quite correct, this was the last of the Flippers to be uploaded to the blog. It was after a lengthy and protracted campaign by our friend FF to convince YMG to include it. I think he kept turning a blind eye, but i did join the push to get this thing included and eventually YMG did the decent thing and uploaded it.

Yes I seriously considered not including this one but it didn't seem fair to single out any performances at all really and, as you rightly say Ryan, there are only a limited number of Dances altogether so I think I had to present it.  I totally understand the difficulty with the marking and the low scores but I think that's fair comment on this distant view of a single Dancer performing to a less than stellar song.  Having said that I know our other host is a big TC fan and who knows there may be higher marks to come

Ok then, let's get it over with. This is probably the worst single Tina ever recorded, boring, monotonous, and the lyrics are plain awful (why do I hear our host say, what's the difference to her other records then?). Tina's looks weren't always very fortunate but I like her voice and I seriously think she has recorded several good disco records - but this is not one of them.
Floid is performing some basic moves though we get to see precious little of him. I'm not even sure if that's good or bad here.

I don't have the heart to rate anything by Tina with a 1, so this gets

2 / 10

from me. And I don't think I'll ever watch it again. Bring on "The Continental".
She's playing all night and the music's all right

this is under review in BB world not straight forward
it will surely gain marks though for no male dancers touching the girls

Thanks for your time everyone.  This one looks set to blow other unliked performances out of the water.  I have been a little unfair to Ms Charles in the past perhaps and a little bit of guilt is now nagging at me but this song is truly bad in my book.  I Love to Love was indeed considerably better but there are other doozies in TC's repertoire too IMO.  Anyway I still think we had to discuss this as a member of RF took part in it but I wonder if it had come later in their development whether Flick would have constructed a different Dance?  I look forward to more honest comments friends and there are a few good correspondents with fine track records still to go as I recall.....

Focusing solely on the dancing, Floid does a fine job here, which I guess is what was asked for.

Very kind Colm but I think you're right that this whole situation is not Floid's fault.  So far the average is somewhat below Silly Love Songs even though the lyrics would probably qualify under the same title.  Now I just need one more contributor to comment and I can post a score on the league table...

Floid does a good job in what was easily one of Tina's weakest hit singles and not a patch on it's excellent predecessor. A rating oh how about a 5?

Sorry this will be a low score, we don't have any of the ladies. We just have floyd for thirty seconds. The song itself is not as good as I Love to Love. Nothing more to say about this.

score 2 out of 10.

Thanks for your ratings Bucksby and SFE.  I appreciate you trying to mark this performance which may well have as "little" Dancing as any of the RF performances.  I know some are feeling some sympathy for Floid here and I rather agree but I still ask for an honest assessment of your enjoyment as the benchmark here.

Re: LOVE ME LIKE A LOVER

Gorgeous Daze
Poor old Floid. The bruising he received over 'You Make Me Feel' has only just faded away, and now this. A turkey of Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas morning proportions. Or is it? Because I don't think you can call this a routine so it's unfair to compare it with the other fowls. It's just Floid doing a bit of perfunctory dancing in a misguided attempt to make Tina's performance more interesting. I know we have relatively few RF routines and that our hosts all run things a little differently, and I'm completely cool about that - this isn't a criticism - but if this one merits ratings then Sue's contribution to 'Lay Your Love On Me' certainly does.

Such precautions are taken to ensure that Floid doesn't steal Tina's show it creates a comical perspective. So you could almost think that Floid's clothes are a knowing part of the joke. With the weak song and frumpy singer the whole thing is evidential of 76 drift. It's not OFTDs, there's little there, and it's hard to imagine what there could possibly be with less to like. So I'm being generous and considerate to Floid in giving it 1.5/10.

As Geoff Boycott once said after being run out because of a reckless England team-mate: 'Me average!'.

Re: LOVE ME LIKE A LOVER

Excellent review as usual GD.  Word of the week definitely "frumpy".  I see your point about Lay Your Love on Me but it really is only a numbers game for RF from my perspective.  There's less than 20 performances left to review and almost half are solos and duets so I really see the need to review all of them.  Some are certainly not full performances but I think it is still worth giving people the chance to review them.  I could perhaps remove the need to rate them as Ryan did for LYLOM and in retrospect I almost wish I had to be quite honest.
