Re: Pan's People on Top of the Pops - STILL IN PROGRESS!

Good work Vin.

This might complicate it too much but I'd describe 'The Tango's Over' not as a backing dance but more a routine with accompanying artist.  I'd also categorize 'Summertime City' as such as well.

There is also a confirmed backing dance to Bobbie Gentry as she sang "If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody" which I have jotted down as 30/04/70 although I'm not sure if there are any possible alternative dates for that one.

Although it has been a while, when discussing dances in long flowing pink dresses (as you do) Sue was certain of dancing to Ms Grace so I think you can safely dismiss the Popscene guess regarding a Rod Stewart song from 09/01/75.

And if the 16/01/75 did indeed include a 'Help Me Make It...', as suggested by Popscene, that would have been a repeat of the VT from earlier in the month and not a new performance.  However, I'm dubious myself if there was a second outing for HMMITTN.

Thanks for your comments. While compiling the list, I realized that "backing" would not always be a perfect description. However, I didn't want to occupy precious space from the "notes" column. What I had in mind, was a short and easy characterization, and "backing" seemed to be just that. Nevertheless I'm open for suggestions.
I agree that "Summertime City" and "The Tango's Over" are different from "Everybody Clap" or "Hot Love". Maybe I could just add (with artist) instead of (backing).

I'll gladly add the Bobbie Gentry backing dance to the list. It seems 30/04/1970 was the only time the song was performed on TOTP.

Additionally, I'll delete Rod Stewart & The Faces from the list.

Yes it is dubious if HMMITTN was performed a second time (as most of the Popscene entries in the list are dubious). I only included it for completeness sake. Popscene does not list it as a repeat (the same goes for Philadelphia Freedom), that's why I didn't label it as a repeat either. I thought it would be just consequential to adopt the Popscene entries, dubious as they are, exactly how they are listed there.

I realise you may still be filling in details Vin but a note regarding Dee Dee's last Dance to Rock on Brother needs adding.  Also this is just my opinion but I'm not sure the italics and Popscene note are enough to clarify the uncertainty of the possible dances.  Perhaps a colour change is needed after all or maybe you could use offset or some such other device if others agree?

Yes that is something I am unsure about myself. I would love to hear (= read) other opinions about this. Of course, there is also the possibility to separate the Popscene entries from the main list and list them as an appendix.

The problem I have with a colour change is that it might have a reverse effect as it would highlight the dubious entries.

I've added "Cry Like A Baby" by The Box Tops as the first Pan's People routine, as it is officially mentioned in their book (but also in other sources around the web which predate the book). I know we discussed their first routine a while ago, and it was unclear if this was an error in the book. In a newspaper article Dee Dee was cited claiming that "Young Girl" by Gary Puckett was the first Pan's People performance.
Any opinions?

Excellent work, Vin - definitive!
It's very clear and concise and , yes, it's good to show the entire Pan's People TOTP output in a single post.
The italicised entries are fine because they don't stick out like a sore thumb. However, may I suggest that the entries are described as either "Speculative" or "Unconfirmed". To say they 'should be treated with caution' makes Popscene sound like a bottle of bleach.
Was the other list of any use at all?
As mentioned previously, the full title of the '76 Ross number includes (Do You Know Where You're Going To)
The 9/10/75 edition was the 600th.

Hi Vin,

In a 2006 interview Dee Dee says "No one can remember but I've always thought it was Young Girl' by Union Gap."
http://www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk/news/848408.dee_dees_top_of_the_pops_memories/

In the 2014 Guardian piece she says "Our first Top of the Pops as Pan's People was just Flick, Ruth and me dancing to Young Love by Gary Puckett & Union Gap".

So going on the earlier article, even Dee Dee isn't 100% sure. Probably the earlier article is a better reflection of where knowledge really stands.

The Top of the Tops dance troupe fog of spring 1968 always seems very hard to peer through.
...is she really going out with him?

LOL. I adopted your proposal.

Yes I know. If you look a little closer you will find a few more entries where the song title or the artist have been shortened a bit. E.g. Dionne Warwicke & The Spinners instead of Dionne Warwicke & The Detroit Spinners. Or "The Green Manalishi (With The Two-Prong Crown)" has become just "The Green Manalishi". The reason is simple: whenever possible, I wanted to avoid line breaks. All entries should appear in just a single line as I think that makes reading such a list much easier. This is not a problem when you're viewing the forum via the "http://one-for-the-dads.979225.n3.nabble.com" address as that will you give you the "full screen" view. However, for those of us who come here via "http://www.oneforthedads.org.uk", the available space is much narrower, with the background picture of Legs & Co. visible on both sides of the forum.

Hmm yes it seems as if it is not quite certain which record they danced to on their first performance. I remember Dee Dee mentioning "Young Love" but no date was given. The book says "Cry Like A Baby", and so do lots of other websites I checked (like PP.com for example).

Maybe I should accept that their first dance is uncertain, and simply omit it altogether.

Vin, I think I recall Jez on this issue and his feeling was that the three girls who danced to the their first song were just acting as stand-ins or try-outs and the Dancers were not really Pans People on TOTP until the second Dance to US Male.  I hope I'm paraphrasing him accurately but as you say this issue is open to interpretation

Re: Pan's People on Top of the Pops - STILL IN PROGRESS!

When this query was raised with one of the dancers, the answer given was that Cry Like A Baby, mentioned as being the first one in a pre-publication copy, was a factual error. The publishers were informed that Young Girl was the first song danced to by three of them before the full outfit was in place for U.S. Male. However, the printers still went ahead with mistakenly listing The Box Tops number instead of the Union Gap chart-topper.
The only question to arise from this confirmation is whether Cry Like A Baby was danced to secondly, if at all.

It shows just how easy it is to create an 'old wives tale', especially when it is in print.

Ok I think it's best to delete "Cry Like A Baby" then.

As all known performances of "Young Girl" took place in May 1968, yet "Cry Like A Baby" is only listed for 18/04/1968, this isn't very likely.

I've added "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves" by Cher for 11/11/1971. Jez had the date down as "Nov/Dec 71", but I guess that was entered at a time when we did not yet know the exact line-up for 18/11/1971 & 02/12/1971, the only other dates that Cher was listed in the BBC database.

Probably nothing new but the Daily Mirror 19/12/68 said that Pan's People would perform on the Christmas show painted gold and there is a picture of them dressed as Indian Squaws. Must be for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

I have it on good authority that the video for "Do The Funky Chicken" was filmed on 07/05/1970 and thus not aired on 30/04/1970 but on 14/05/1970, so the date has been changed.
