Re: VOTE HERE for your Fav TOTPs performance of the week 09/07/87

The Rubberband Man
Shakin' Stevens surely thinking of the days when his backing dancers were a bit more proportionate

How can I ever unwatch that performance tonight, and to a Gary glitter cover as well?
All bound for Lulu Land in an E Type Jag (but more likely to be an E reg)

That Shaky performance was the gayest thing I've seen in ages

Performance of the night for me though was the late Colin Vearcombe, aka Black, by the proverbial country mile. Superb.

Shakin' Stevens- The Difficult Years: 'That must have been some heavy stuff I was taking last night, these dancers look nothing like the picture they showed me. I used to be supported by the best looking girls in the Country. What has happened to me'. Alternatively. 'Shakey spends too much time in Soho' news headline!
  Another show of dubious quality for me, with very little to recommend it. Gary must be wondering why he bothered to become a DJ. We have;
A-ha- never saw the attraction, typical 80s dire pop. And never seen this Bond Film, in fact I have never seen any Bond Film made after the 70s, no appeal whatsoever.
Black- one of the few good things on the show and almost won my choice tonight.
Breakers- Genesis- not today thank you very much. Jackie Wilson- the best track on the show, with silly video. What happened to the iron, it was burning the shirt and will set the whole place on fire! Mel and Kim- not enough to give this a vote but one of the better things here. Heart- including one of my girls from the 80s, Ann Wilson. Almost tempted, but Ann does that to me.
The Christians- The other track that cheered me up, and the one I picked. Good performance and stole it from Colin's hands. Sorry Colin!
Pet Shop Boys- my pick yesterday, so no chance today. Neil, do you have something you need to speak about from your days at Catholic School?
TTD- Good all round performer- but not for me today either.
On reflection, the show was a bit better than I thought, and a lot better than yesterday's. Perhaps, I am being spoilt by the 70s editions posted for review. Another one next.

So ER, Shakey's dancers or Man 2 Man and Man Parish. Is there only one way to find out. FIGHT!!!

You've never seen a Daniel Craig Bond film, H2? Genuinely surprised. Casino Royale is superb, one of the best ever. Amazing theme too.

The most recent Bond film I have seen is, I think, Moonraker, made in late 70s. Seriously, never seen a later one. No Bond can compare with the Scotsman who only ever plays himself in films.

I can only think of one word to describe that Shaky performance. Horrendous.

The two records that i really liked were `breakers`, M&K & Heart. I will save my Heart vote for a later show, so on this occasion i will go for Mel & Kim.

Can some kind soul please enlighten me what these 'breakers' were actually all about? I mean, Heart and Mel & Kim were already at No. 15 and 16 respectively, while two other acts on the show, namely Shakin' Stevens and The Christians, were still hovering outside the Top 20. Why were the former just 'breakers' but not the latter? I really never understood the concept of the 'breakers' (that is if there ever was one).

Indeed, "breakers" seems to be a rather loose term. It might have meant something in the past, as in records that are about to "break" into the Top 40, but now it just seems a way of cramming more tunes into half an hour. TotPs has a sort of make-it-up-as-you-go-along format. What other show, for instance, would have tolerated Simon Bates' bumblings for over ten years?

Who's That Hurll
I would say the Breakers are a video clip of a song that's been going up the charts and the act is not available in the studio to perform it. It's a taster of what might be to come, if the song keeps going up. For example, the next week or in two weeks time, we might have the full video or a studio performance. I do agree though, that it was a better concept when featuring songs lower down the charts i.e. chart positions of say 25 to 40, where that might be the only opportunity those records ever have of featuring on Top of the Pops.

The Rubberband Man
Performance of the night for the third show running is the epic "It's A Sin" from the Pet Shop Boys.
As Byron once said, "Pleasure's a sin, and sometimes sin's a pleasure."

If you'd shown me that Shaky vid I would have said 1981, 82 maybe? It feels so out of context in 1987.
Having said I am voting for it as it made me chuckle!
When Rosie flares her nostrils

I go weak!

What on earth was Shaky thinking! He was an embarrassment to himself. Incidentally, A Little Boogie Woogie In The Back Of My Mind was previously heard on TOTP close to exactly 10 years before. Performed by its co-writer, one Gary Glitter.

Anyhow, on another unexciting edition it's A-ha for me again.

A decent enough show but nothing really outstanding, really like the A-ha song and video though, so they get my vote.

Goodness me! Judging by that first performance, I couldn’t help but feel this was the beginning of the end for Shaky, career wise.

The winner for me by a country mile has got to be Colin Vearncombe, great song and he sung it live too.
